Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth in La Crosse
Gentle, Comfortable Extractions
Dr. Malin tries to save your teeth whenever possible and he is an expert at doing so. However, sometimes a tooth is too deteriorated to be saved, and must be extracted to prevent infections and painful swelling. Wisdom teeth may need to be removed to prevent overcrowding or damage to other teeth and to your jaw.
Tooth extraction can be a subject of great anxiety for many patients, especially those who have had bad experiences in the past. However, Dr. Malin uses advanced technology to perform extractions that are gentle and comfortable.
Gentle, Minimally Invasive Tooth Removal
Traditional extraction techniques cause considerable harm to the gum and bone tissue surrounding the tooth. After a tooth is removed in this manner, the tissues swell, they heal slowly, and bone loss is accelerated due to tissue damage.
Dr. Malin will gently extract your tooth in a way that preserves as much of the surrounding gum and bone as possible. This reduces swelling, speeds up healing and prevents accelerated bone loss. It also greatly reduces the time and preparation needed for a dental implant.
Local anesthetics are highly acidic and this is what causes the uncomfortable burning sensation when they are administered. Dr. Malin adds a natural agent (sodium bicarbonate) to the anesthetic to neutralize acidity. This brings the pH level close to the pH level of the body.
As a result, when the injection is given, there is little to no uncomfortable sensation. Many patients have even commented that they felt nothing at all.
We will make your comfort a top priority and do everything we can to make you feel at ease during your procedure. For added comfort in the dental chair, we provide blankets, pillows, headphones and dark glasses that reduce the glare from the lights in the room.
Dr. Malin is very friendly and reassuring, and really listens to your concerns. He will thoroughly explain your procedure beforehand so you know what is going to happen and can feel comfortable.
If you need extra assistance to feel at ease, Dr. Malin will employ a breakthrough drug-free relaxation system known as NuCalm®. NuCalm is a natural, safe and proven comfort technology that uses a combination of supplements, soothing sounds and other techniques to produce the same level of comfort and lack of anxiety as drug-induced sedation, but with none of the harmful side-effects.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the molars in the very back of your mouth (also known as third molars) that usually emerge during your late teens or early twenties. If they don’t have enough room to come in or otherwise do not come in correctly, they can cause pain, crowding of your other teeth, bite misalignment or structural damage to your jaw. If this is the case, it is usually best to extract them.
Dr. Malin will use our state-of-the-art cone beam 3D CT scanner to obtain 3D 360-degree views of your wisdom teeth, nerves and other tissues. He will use this information to plan and perform your wisdom tooth extraction so it is precise, minimally invasive and comfortable.
Socket Preservation to Prepare for a Replacement Tooth
A tooth socket is the hollow space in the bony ridge of your jaw that holds the root of your tooth. After your tooth is extracted, this space is left empty. As the empty space heals, it fills up with newly formed bone. However, without intervention, the regenerated socket will be smaller in height and width than it was before.
This creates a sunken area on your dental arch that can be visually unattractive. It can also present problems if you wish to replace your missing tooth with a dental implant in the future. Dental implants need adequate bone support, but a sunken socket is usually not able to provide enough support. A shrunken socket can also cause problems when receiving a dental bridge, as food can become trapped in the sunken area under the bridge and breed bacteria and infection.
As part of your extraction procedure, Dr. Malin can place bone grafting material into your empty tooth socket to regenerate new bone. This treatment is known as socket preservation. With socket preservation, you will preserve the shape of your jawbone and obtain a solid foundation for a future dental implant or dental bridge.
